Literacy 360° Tune-Up Checklist

Literacy 360° Tune-Up Checklist

In answering questions in the Problem Solving Cycle, a Tune-Up Checklist is created with the help of Literacy 360° Coaches.

The Literacy 360° Tune-Up Checklist is a procedure for planning a change in instruction for an individual child based on information obtained from the CIRCLE observation findings and data from literacy screening/progress monitoring measures (i.e., IGDI, PELI, GRTR).  It will include answers to the questions of: What is causing the problem?; What is the solution?; and Is it being implemented?  The Tune-Up Checklist is developed by the teacher and coach together and can be used with one individual child.

The Literacy 360° Tune-Up Checklist consists of four sections:

Section 1 – Reasons: The Tune-Up Checklist is used to link CIRCLE Teacher Literacy Focus and Child Literacy Engagement data with literacy skills data (e.g., PELI). These data are prepared and summarized by the coach and explained and discussed with the teacher. The checklist consists of guiding questions used by the coach to prompt, teach, and maintain each teacher’s thinking about how and what to do to strengthen children’s classroom literacy experiences.
Section 3 – Instructional Procedure and Fidelity Checklist: The instructional procedures to be implemented are described so that teachers or others will be able to implement and replicate them. To make implementation measurable, it is helpful to write out the procedure in simple, observable steps/actions, in order of implementation. The checklist is a recipe for using and repeating use of the procedure by others.
Section 2 – Instructional Change Goal: Based on the data-driven reflection, instructional change goals are developed to overcome any limitations in instruction needed to improve an aspect of literacy (letter sounds, letter names, etc.). The teacher and coach seek to identify evidence-based strategies that best apply to an identified problem.
Section 4 – Coach Tune-Up Feedback: Coaches observe the teacher implement the Tune-Up Checklist procedures using the Fidelity Checklist. The teacher is provided feedback based on the observation. Findings are discussed and existing plans are updated with improvement strategies.
